Why use a PU topcoat on your Lava Stone Cast Floors or Microcement floor or wall?

Are you completely in love with the sleek, seamless look of a Lava Rock Cast Floor or Microcement floor or wall? Understandably! These materials give any room a modern, luxurious feel. But how do you ensure your floor or wall stays beautiful for years to come, resistant to stains, scratches, and wear? The answer: a PU topcoat!

What is a PU topcoat?

A PU (polyurethane) topcoat is a transparent protective layer specifically developed to make surfaces like lava stone cast floors and microcement extra durable. It prevents dirt and moisture from building up and makes your floor or wall easy to clean. Moreover, it significantly extends the lifespan of your finish without causing yellowing.

Applying a PU topcoat yourself? Here's how!

Want to get started yourself? With a little preparation, it's definitely doable! Below, you'll find step-by-step instructions for applying a PU topcoat to your Lava Rock Cast Floors or Microcement floor or wall.

1. Preparation is half the battle

Make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free of grease. A little dust or dirt may remain visible under the protective layer – a real shame! Also, check for damage and touch up if necessary.

2. When restoring, sand lightly

Lightly sand the surface with fine sandpaper (eg, grit P220-P320). This will ensure the PU topcoat adheres well. Then, vacuum the surface again with a slightly damp cloth.

If the floor or wall has just been installed, you can sand it with grit 80.

3. Mix topcoat

Always follow the instructions on the packaging. PU consists of two components that must be thoroughly mixed. Stir gently until the mixture is smooth. You can do this with a small whisk or butterfly mixer. Attach this to your cordless drill. Mix at a low speed for 2 minutes.

4. Applying the topcoat

Use a short-haired 2k nylon roller. Apply the topcoat evenly and thinly. Work in strokes, following the wet edge to avoid streaks or marks. For walls, you can use a brush for the edges and corners. After application, roll it over with a dry roller to flatten and seal the PU texture.

Applying the PU will create white roller tracks. You'll need to quickly check the roller tracks during application. Work meter by meter in this manner and return to your work with a dry roller. Never use a wet roller on areas that are already quite dry.

5. Second layer for extra protection

After the first coat has dried, you can apply the second or third coat. This usually takes 3-4 hours. You can lightly sand the surface before applying the new coat. This ensures there are no dust particles or hairs on the surface. Subsequent coats must be applied within 48 hours, otherwise you'll have to sand again.

6. Patience…

Allow the PU topcoat to cure thoroughly before using the floor or wall intensively. It usually takes 7 days for the layer to fully cure. It should not be covered during this period. The chemical reaction cannot occur if it is covered.

Important: Observe the drying times! A properly cured PU topcoat is the key to a long-lasting result.
