For wall and floor

Microcement

A mineral finish with a matte concrete look, hand-applied with a trowel. Matte, seamless, in your colour. In a living room, microcement can be used on both wall and floor — no risk of water damage, no falling objects as in a bathroom.

Available in 50+ standard colours, plus bespoke options in NCS, RAL and RAL Design. Two coats of PU topcoat on the floor for ease of maintenance; two coats are also sufficient on the wall.

Lavasteen Seamless Floor

A poured epoxy floor with ground lava stone. Thicker, stronger, slip-resistant. For living rooms with high traffic, children, pets or underfloor heating — Lavasteen has better heat transfer and withstands daily wear.

20 standard colours. NCS and RAL on request. With one coat of UV-friendly PU topcoat for ease of maintenance.

The choice

Microcement or Lavasteen in the living room?

In a living room, the finish does not need to be waterproof — which opens up more choices than in a wet room. The choice between microcement and Lavasteen here is about look, load and underfloor heating, not waterproofing.

Microcement — for the ultimate feeling of one surface

Microcement is thin (1–2 mm) and can be applied in the same shade over floor, wall and even furniture casing. No thresholds, no skirting boards, no colour difference between elements — only the end result that feels like one continuous material. Ideal for minimalist, editorial-style interiors where every transition must be softened.

Lavasteen — for those who put extra load on the floor

Lavasteen is 3–5 mm thick and therefore stronger and more durable than microcement. For living rooms with lots of children, dogs or heavy furniture (grand piano, cabinets on legs), the extra thickness is noticeable. And the natural grain structure provides just a little more grip, pleasant for those who like to walk barefoot.

Underfloor heating — Lavasteen wins narrowly

Both materials work seamlessly with underfloor heating. Lavasteen conducts heat slightly faster due to the epoxy mass and lava grains — you feel the warmth about 30% faster than with microcement. In practice, a small plus for a living room, but the difference is there.

Colour choice in living room light

A living room often has large windows, east or west light incidence, and evening lighting with warm LEDs. Microcement is available in a larger colour palette (50+ standard) than Lavasteen (20 standard). For very specific colour matching (e.g. together with an existing wall or piece of furniture), microcement is often the more logical choice.

Frequently asked

Microcement or Lavasteen in my living room?

Can microcement be used on a living room floor?
Yes. In a living room there is no water risk, so microcement is a good option for the floor. Two coats of PU topcoat provide sufficient protection against daily wear. For more heavily used living rooms (children, pets, high traffic) we often recommend Lavasteen due to the extra thickness.
Do both materials work with underfloor heating?
Yes. Both are suitable for underfloor heating. Lavasteen conducts heat slightly faster due to the epoxy mass — in practice you notice this through faster heating. Microcement also responds well, just a little later.
How durable is a microcement living room floor?
With normal living room use, a microcement floor with PU topcoat lasts 10+ years without significant wear. Local repairs are possible; the matte finish conceals transitions well.
Can I use one colour across floor and wall?
Yes, with microcement. The same shade across floor and wall creates a seamless single-surface feel — no skirting boards, no thresholds, no colour variation. With Lavasteen this is also possible, but the textural difference between floor and wall remains subtly visible.
How long does it take to install a living room floor?
Depending on surface area, typically 3 to 5 working days, including drying times between coats. The space is fully cured after 7 days.
