The combination

Why we choose a different material per zone

A kitchen has two types of surfaces: the wall (especially the splashback behind the worktop) and the floor. On the wall little happens — splashes and grease are the main load. On the floor chairs slide, objects fall and there is daily stress. That is why we choose a different material per zone.

Microcement on the splashback

Behind the hob and worktop, microcement is a strong choice. No tile grout where grease and grime can accumulate — a smooth, mineral surface that you wipe clean in one go. Works through to around sockets and light switches if you choose. 50+ standard colours, or bespoke in NCS/RAL.

Microcement on the floor — only in light-use kitchens

For open-plan living kitchens and family kitchens, microcement on the floor is a workable option. Two to three layers of PU topcoat provide wear resistance against sliding chairs and dropped cutlery. But the PU layer is ultimately the waterproof layer — if damaged, moisture can penetrate the mineral. For commercial kitchens, hospitality or intensive domestic use we recommend Lavasteen Seamless Floor as a more durable alternative.

Lavasteen for heavy-duty floors

Lavasteen Seamless Floor is made for daily stress. The epoxy components form a dense, closed mass — waterproof even when damaged. A scratch or impact in the top layer does not mean water can penetrate. For kitchens with regular splashes, crumbs or grease stains that gives extra assurance. For a kitchen floor several layers of filling PU are applied on top — more than in a bathroom — for extra wear resistance.

Or the entire kitchen in Lavasteen

If you want to extend the mineral look: Lavasteen can also go on the wall. One material for floor and splashback, the same paste, the same colour — to one continuous mineral interior. On the wall one layer of filling PU is applied; on the floor several.

Frequently asked

Microcement or Lavasteen in my kitchen?

Which floor do I choose for an open-plan kitchen?
For a standard open-plan living kitchen, microcement on the floor can work perfectly well — with two to three layers of PU topcoat for wear resistance. For a commercial, intensively used or hospitality kitchen we recommend Lavasteen Seamless Floor as a more durable alternative. Lavasteen is by far the best for heavy-duty kitchen floors.
Which material on the splashback?
Microcement is the most chosen option there — matte, mineral, seamless. 50+ colours plus NCS/RAL bespoke. No grout lines where grease and grime can accumulate. Lavasteen on the splashback is also possible, with one layer of filling PU.
Can I have floor and wall in the same colour?
Yes. Either you combine microcement wall with Lavasteen floor in coordinated tones, or you do both surfaces in Lavasteen for one continuous material. We bring colour samples for both materials so you can compare in your own kitchen light.
How long does a complete kitchen take?
On average 2 to 3 days, depending on surface area and chosen combination. Lavasteen on the floor requires more PU layers than in a bathroom, so slightly more drying time between coats.
How do I maintain the floor and wall?
For microcement: damp cloth with pH-neutral cleaner, no aggressive degreasers. For Lavasteen: can even be cleaned with bleach and a brush, then rinse thoroughly with water.
